READ BETWEEN THE LINES

read-between-the-lines

A couple of days ago without too much thought, I posted on Facebook (FB) about the severe storms that pushed through our Houston area. I showed a picture of a burning house with text saying “Someone on the street perpendicular to our house got struck by lightning.” Immediately, one of my FB friends saw the post and must have thought, quite literally, that someone got struck by lightning. So they replied back and asked – “The house or a person?”

And then earlier this week, I took my new puppy to get her shots and was asked by the office assistant to go into the first room on the left. However to do that, you first had to literally take an immediate left in the hall to go down the hallway and then the room was the first door on the right. But the assistant was just simply stating what she viewed as the first door possible to go into, that was in the left direction of the hallway.

Confused yet or are you able to read between the lines?

What Hillary Clinton’s polls tell us about competence vs. trustworthiness

It’s hard to avoid all the political news right now!

Every time you turn on the TV or read the news, there’s a new story about one of our five presidential candidates.

What the polls reveal

About a week ago I saw a poll released that compared Hillary Clinton’s Competence vs. her Trustworthiness. I was quite intrigued, because after all, one might think that competence has something to do with being able to trust someone, right?

The poll showed that approximately seventy five percent of Americans believed Hillary is competent to be commander in chief. However only about forty percent believed she is trustworthy. Interesting! I wish I could remember the news station I saw this on so I could cite this, but I hadn’t had my coffee yet. You know how that goes.

While the exact numbers aren’t extremely important, the concept is. This poll shows that people believe Hillary can get the job done, but don’t necessarily believe what she says. When thinking about that, what would you prefer from your leader? Or what if we didn’t  have to make that choice?

And then there’s this!

Insanity – Doing the Same Thing and Expecting a Different Result

Insanity doing the same thing over and expecting a different result

How many of you have ever used a light switch to turn a light on?
Most everyone in a first world country, right?
And when you turn the light switch on, what happened?
The light came on, didn’t it? Well at least if the power was working or the light bulb wasn’t burned out.
The more important question is – How many times do you expect a different result when you turn the light switch on?
Probably none. We all expect the light to turn on every time.

When I get up in the mornings, I know that after a certain time that if I start petting my chihuahua that he will want to get up and be petted. However, if I don’t make a gesture that resembles petting him, he will simply lay there and stay still or continue to try and sleep.

What do chihuahuas and light bulbs have to do with anything?

Small Changes Can Make a Big Impact

Small changes can make a big impact

Think back to a time when your organization made a small change that resulted in a big impact, hopefully in a positive way. I recently had an experience that started me thinking about all the little things that make such significant impact.

Reflect for a moment the role gasoline plays in the amazing impact of combustion. And the reality is, it doesn’t require much gas at all to make that happen. But without it, the reaction wouldn’t occur. Think about small monetary contributions made every month to your retirement account that can accumulate to be a major retirement fund equaling to hundreds of thousands of dollars due to the compounding effect. Or contemplate one tiny pebble thrown into the water that causes a radiating ripple effect that can last for minutes.

Consider now, companies like Apple, Google, and Amazon that began by making small changes in the way they did things in order to change their course and ultimately their momentous impact in today’s market. It’s pretty remarkable when you stop and think about it.

Back to the reason I began thinking more about small changes leading to big impact.

Your Blind Side – What’s holding You Back?

blind-1What’s holding you back from having more influence, more sales, more profits?

Several years ago I was playing softball and tore my labrum. The labrum is a piece of fibrocartilage (rubbery tissue) attached to the rim of the shoulder socket that helps keep the ball of the joint in place. And when it’s damaged, the ball and socket don’t fit as they should and it is very painful.

Often times when we experience an injury like that it’s because we have weaker surrounding muscles that aren’t providing the appropriate support for what we’ve asked the other body parts to do.

Many times a torn labrum requires surgery. But after having talked to several people I found out that even with surgery that the recovery would be nearly 1 year and that if I kept playing, that ultimately I’d probably have to have surgery again. So I asked my ortho what the other options were. He told me that I could rehab by trying to build up the surrounding muscles instead. He said if it didn’t work, we could default to the surgery option and that I had a 50/50 chance of recovery without the surgery.

So I had him show me the exercises and left the office with the intention that surgery was not something I intended to do and that I would repair my shoulder in a more “non-traditional”, but natural way. It would require a lot of focus, patience, diligence, and working through some serious pain.
How many times in our careers have we been through painful times due to an “injury” caused by our weaker side, or in other words, our blind side?

We all have them. Our blind side is the side of our character that is not as well developed or not developed at all. The side that prevents us from being able to accomplish more.
